### Can I sue a boarding school for abuse that happened decades ago?
Possibly. Many states have extended deadlines for child sexual abuse, and several opened revival windows for expired claims. Some survivors also argue a school concealed abuse, which can affect deadlines. The rules depend on the state, so a lawyer licensed there should check.

### Does Title IX apply to private boarding schools?
Only if the school receives federal financial assistance. Many independent schools do not, so Title IX may not apply. State negligence law still does, and it is the basis for most boarding school claims.

### What is the troubled teen industry?
It is an informal name for private residential programs for adolescents, such as therapeutic boarding schools, wilderness programs and residential treatment centers. Oversight varies by state, and a federal investigation found thousands of abuse allegations across such programs between 1990 and 2007.

### Who can be sued besides the school?
Depending on the facts, claims may involve the school's parent company or religious sponsor, educational consultants who recommended the placement, transport services that moved the student, and individual staff. Each one's liability depends on its role and what it knew.

### What if the school has already released an investigation report?
Many schools have commissioned outside investigations into past abuse. Those reports can help a claim by documenting what administrators knew, but they do not replace your own lawyer's review, and the school's report is not a ruling on liability.
